What is Keratoconus?

July 1, 2023|Ocular Health Education

Keratoconus is an eye condition that affects the shape of the cornea, which is the clear outermost layer of the eye that helps to focus light on the retina. In people with keratoconus, the cornea gradually thins and bulges outward, forming a cone-like shape instead of the normal dome shape. This change in shape can cause blurry vision, distortion, and increased sensitivity to light.

The exact cause of keratoconus is not well understood, but it is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. It usually develops during the teenage years or early adulthood and can progress over time.

Symptoms of keratoconus can vary, but may include:

  • Blurred or distorted vision, especially when looking at distant objects
  • Increased sensitivity to bright lights and glare
  • Frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescription
  • Eye strain or discomfort
  • Difficulty with night vision

Treatment for keratoconus depends on the severity of the condition and may include:

  • Eyeglasses or contact lenses: Mild cases of keratoconus may be corrected with glasses or specialized contact lenses.
  • Corneal cross-linking: A minimally invasive procedure that uses UV light and special eye drops to strengthen the cornea and slow or stop the progression of the condition.
  • Corneal transplant: In severe cases, a corneal transplant may be necessary to replace the damaged cornea with a healthy one from a donor.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it's important to schedule an eye exam with an optometrist or ophthalmologist who can diagnose and treat keratoconus or any other eye conditions you may have. Early diagnosis and treatment can help to prevent vision loss and improve your quality of life.
