If eye drops aren't cutting it anymore, it’s time for a professional dry eye exam in Santa Ana. Store-bought drops only hide the problem; they don’t fix it. At Luminous Optometry, we find out why your eyes are dry and create a personal plan to give you lasting relief.
Santa Ana's dry, inland Southern California climate is one of the biggest contributors to dry eye disease in our community. Low humidity and warm temperatures accelerate tear evaporation, leaving your eyes feeling gritty, burning, or irritated — especially during the hotter months.
But the environment is only part of the picture. Personal hygiene habits — particularly lid hygiene — also play a significant role. When the eyelid margins aren't kept clean, the tiny oil-producing meibomian glands along the lid can become clogged, disrupting the tear film and causing what's known as evaporative dry eye.
Common contributing factors we see in our Santa Ana patients include:
At Luminous Optometry, our dry eye exam is a thorough, multi-step evaluation designed to pinpoint the exact cause of your symptoms. Here's what we do:
Step 1: Fluorescein Dye Assessment
We start by applying fluorescein dye to the surface of your eye. This allows us to identify dry spots, staining patterns, and early damage to the corneal surface that are invisible to the naked eye.
Step 2: Identifying the Type of Dry Eye
Not all dry eye are the same. We differentiate between aqueous deficient dry eye (where the eye simply isn't producing enough tears) and evaporative dry eye (where the tear film breaks down too quickly). Identifying which type you have is critical — because the treatment approach is very different for each.
Step 3: Tear Break-Up Time (TBUT)
We measure how long it takes your tear film to break down after a blink. A faster break-up time indicates instability in the tear film and points toward evaporative dry eye.
Step 4: Meibomian Gland Evaluation
We examine the meibomian glands in your eyelids to ensure they are producing and secreting oil properly. These glands are responsible for the lipid layer of your tears that prevents evaporation. If they're blocked or not functioning well, it's a key driver of chronic dry eye.
Step 5: Personalized Treatment Planning
Once we have a complete picture of what's happening, we sit down with you and explain everything — what we found, why it's causing your symptoms, and what we recommend. We don't hand you a pamphlet and send you on your way. We walk through your treatment options together so you feel informed and confident moving forward. A follow-up visit is scheduled a few weeks later to assess your progress and adjust the plan as needed.
Depending on your diagnosis, your personalized treatment plan may include:
Dry eye don't always announce themselves with the obvious symptoms you'd expect. One of our patients came in for a routine eye exam — she wasn't even thinking about dry eyes. But during the refraction, something stood out: she kept going back and forth between lens options, struggling to choose. Her vision would be clear for a brief moment, then blur again. Fluctuating vision like that is a red flag.
When we examined her eyes, we found a significant number of dry spots on the ocular surface. We asked whether she ever experienced burning or watery eyes — and she said yes, very often. She had simply assumed it was normal. We scheduled her for a dedicated dry eye exam, which revealed severe evaporative dry eye.
We started her on artificial tears, a short course of steroid eye drops to calm the inflammation, and fitted her with punctal plugs to help her eyes retain moisture. Over time, her condition improved dramatically. She eventually reached a point where she no longer needed to use artificial tears on a regular basis — and most importantly, her vision became stable and clear.
This case is a good reminder: dry eye can masquerade as a vision problem. If your prescription never seems quite right, or your vision fluctuates through the day, dry eye may be the culprit.
You should consider scheduling a dry eye exam if you:
At Luminous Optometry, we believe that understanding your condition is just as important as treating it. We take the time to explain what's happening with your eyes, why it's happening, and what your options are — in plain language, without rushing you.
Unlike a corporate chain where you might see a different provider at every visit and receive a one-size-fits-all solution, we build a relationship with you. Your treatment plan is tailored to your specific type of dry eye, your lifestyle, and your goals. We monitor your progress at follow-up visits and adjust your plan as your eyes respond to treatment.
We've helped many Santa Ana patients move from daily dependence on artificial tears to lasting comfort — and we'd like to do the same for you.

If you've been using artificial tears regularly for more than a few weeks and still experience burning, stinging, blurry vision, or discomfort, that's a strong sign your condition needs a proper evaluation. OTC drops treat the surface symptoms but don't address the underlying cause. A dry eye exam helps identify why your eyes are dry so we can recommend a targeted treatment — rather than just managing symptoms indefinitely.
Yes — and this is one of the most commonly overlooked symptoms. When the tear film is unstable, it disrupts the smooth optical surface of the eye, causing vision to fluctuate throughout the day. Patients often notice their vision is clear right after blinking but becomes blurry within seconds. If your prescription never seems quite right or your vision changes through the day, dry eye could be the underlying cause.
Punctal plugs are tiny, biocompatible devices inserted into the small drainage canals in your eyelids to slow the drainage of tears off the eye surface. The procedure is quick, minimally invasive, and typically painless. Most patients don't feel them once they're in place. They're a very effective option for patients whose eyes aren't retaining moisture well enough.
Aqueous deficient dry eye means your lacrimal glands aren't producing enough tears. Evaporative dry eye — the more common type — occurs when your meibomian glands aren't releasing enough oil into the tear film, causing tears to evaporate too quickly even if tear volume is normal. Treatment is different for each type, which is why an accurate diagnosis matters before starting any treatment plan.
For some patients, dry eye is a chronic condition that requires ongoing management. For others, it can be significantly improved or resolved with the right treatment. Many of our Santa Ana patients have gone from daily discomfort and heavy reliance on eye drops to lasting comfort with the right combination of treatments. We'll be straightforward with you about what to expect based on your individual diagnosis.
